As influential in its own way as early ’70s efforts by Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, and Marvin Gaye, the Isley Brothers’ 3+3 took black music to the next level. Combining frontline vocalists O’Kelly, Ronald, and Rudolph with the instrumental chops of younger brothers Ernie and Marvin, plus brother-in-law Chris Jasper, the group broke out with the smoking single “That Lady,” featuring Ernie’s Hendrixian guitar. They followed it up with some soulful reworkings of rock songs of the moment (which, as luck would have it, all turned into certified classics), including the Doobie Brothers’ “Listen to the Music,” Seals and Crofts’s “Summer Breeze,” and James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight.” It’s hard to imagine now how daring a strategy that was at the time, but the results sounds as fine today as ever.

Recorded in 1973, 3 + 3 was a major turning point for the Isley Brothers. With this album, the Isleys moved their T-Neck label from Buddah to Epic/CBS (which became Epic/Sony in the early ’90s), and it was at Epic that they unveiled their new lineup. Lead singer Ronald Isley and his siblings O’Kelly and Rudolph remained, but the Isleys became a sextet instead of a trio when cousin Chris Jasper and younger brothers Ernie and Marvin were added. This new lineup was called 3 + 3, and the addition of Jasper on keyboards, Ernie on guitar, and Marvin on bass added exciting new elements to the Isleys’ sound. One of finest R&B bassists of the 1970s, the ever-so-funky Marvin is in a class with heavyweights like Larry Graham and Louis Johnson — and Ernie is a stunning guitarist who is heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix but has a distinctive style of his own. the Isleys had always been lovers of rock, but with the addition of Ernie, their sound became even more overtly rock-influenced. Nonetheless, the rock and pop elements didn’t alienate R&B audiences, which ate this album up. The single “That Lady” (which is based on an Impressions-like gem they had recorded in 1964) was a major hit, and the Isleys are equally captivating on soul interpretations of Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze,” James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” and the Doobie Brothers’ “Listen to the Music.” With this superb album, the Isley Brothers sounded better than ever — and they gained a lot of new fans without sacrificing the old ones.

School Days is the jaw-dropping fourth studio album by GRAMMY Award-winning bassist Stanley Clarke. It reached #2 on Billboard’s Top Jazz Albums and features the standouts “Quiet Afternoon” and “The Dancer.” School Days highlights Clarke’s riveting compositional skills and irresistible technique. Every pro electric-bass player and their mothers wore out the grooves of this record when it first came out, trying to cop Clarke’s speedy, thundering, slapped-thumb bass licks. Yet ultimately, it was Clarke’s rapidly developing compositional skills that made this album so listenable and so much fun for the rest of us, then and now. The title track not only contributed a killer riff to the bass vocabulary; it is a cunningly organized piece of music with a well-defined structure. Moreover, Clarke follows his calling card with two tunes that are even more memorable – the sauntering ballad “Quiet Afternoon” and an ebullient, Brazilian percussion-laced number with a good string arrangement and a terrific groove, “The Dancer.” Clarke also brings out the standup bass for a soulful acoustic dialogue with John McLaughlin on “Desert Song.” Evidently enthused by their leader’s material, David Sancious (keyboards) and Raymond Gomez (guitars) deliver some of their best solos on records – and with George Duke on hand on one cut, you hear some preliminary flickerings of Clarke’s ventures into the commercial sphere. But at this point in time, Clarke was triumphantly proving that it was possible to be both good and commercial at the same time.

As phenomenally popular as Earth, Wind & Fire was from the mid-’70s to the early ’80s, it’s easy to forget that the band was hardly an overnight success. With Head to the Sky – EWF’s fourth album overall, second with Philip Bailey, and second for Columbia – Maurice White’s very spiritual and ambitious brand of soul and funk was starting to pay off commercially. The Latin-influenced “Evil” became the soulsters’ biggest hit up to that point, and material ranging from the hauntingly pretty title song (which boasts one of Bailey’s finest performances ever) to the jazz fusion gem “Zanzibar” is just as rewarding. The lineup White unveiled with Last Days and Time was working out beautifully; Bailey was clearly proving to be a major asset. Also worth noting is the presence of singer Jessica Cleaves, who left after this album and, several years later, resurfaced in George Clinton’s eccentric female group the Brides of Funkenstein. EWF still had what was basically a cult following, but that was beginning to change with Head to the Sky. And when EWF took off commercially in 1974 and 1975, many new converts went back and saw for themselves just how excellent an album Head to the Sky was.
