Last Days and Time is the third studio album by American R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire, released in 1972, their first on Columbia Records. It was recorded at Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood, California.

Earth, Wind & Fire were nothing if not ambitious, and by the time of their third album they had forged an individual sound by absorbing nearly everything that had gone before them in the previous ten years. It was as if they were trying to encapsulate every eclectic foray pursued by Motown, from catchy, rhythmic pop to churning funk, and even from Stevie Wonder singing borrowed folk songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind” (here, Philip Bailey did “Where Have All the Flowers Gone”) to the schmaltzy, string-filled pop that spelled legitimacy to Motown. Not only that, they wanted to incorporate Sly & the Family Stone’s horn-filled, gutbucket R&B and some of the fusion style of Weather Report. On Last Days and Time, they succeeded in pulling all that into their orbit, but they hadn’t yet managed one crucial thing: they hadn’t learned to write hits. That would come next. –William Ruhlmann

Spirit is the seventh studio album by Earth, Wind & Fire, released in 1976 on Columbia Records. The album reached number 2 on the Billboard Pop and R&B Albums Chart and has been certified double platinum in the US by the RIAA. Charles Stepney died during the sessions for Spirit, and Maurice White took over fully the arranging and production duties for the band.

With That’s the Way of the World having enjoyed multi-platinum success, Earth, Wind & Fire had a lot to live up to when the time came for another studio project. And the soul powerhouse didn’t let anyone down (either commercially or creatively) on the outstanding Spirit, which boasted hits ranging from the optimistic “On Your Face” and the passionate funk classic “Getaway” to the poetic ballad “Imagination.” Philip Bailey is as charismatic as ever on “Imagination” and the gorgeous title song. Maurice White’s message and vision (an interesting blend of Afro-American Christianity and Eastern philosophy) was as positive and uplifting as ever, and as always, EWF expressed this positivity without being Pollyanna-ish or corny. And even if one didn’t take EWF’s calls for unity, hard work, self-respect, and faith in God to heart, they had no problem with their solid grooves. –AllMusic Review by Alex Henderson

I Am is the ninth studio album by the R&B band Earth, Wind & Fire, released on June 9, 1979 on CBS Records. The album features the singles “Boogie Wonderland” with The Emotions and “After the Love Has Gone”. I Am has been certified double platinum in the US by the RIAA and platinum in the UK and in Canada by the British Phonographic Industry and Music Canada.

Disco was at the height of its popularity in 1979, when Earth, Wind & Fire responded with its most disco-influenced single ever, the glossy and infectious “Boogie Wonderland.” Up to that point, EWF had pretty much ignored disco, and when the band finally acknowledged the style, the soulsters weren’t about to inundate listeners with it. “Boogie Wonderland” (which features the Emotions, a female group for whom Maurice White had been producing major hits) isn’t representative of I Am on the whole. From the hit ballad “After the Love Has Gone” to the exuberant “Let My Feelings Flow,” I Am isn’t a radical departure from its predecessor, All ‘n All. Though not in a class with That’s the Way of the World, Spirit, or All ‘n All, I Am is a rewarding album that has a lot going for it. –AllMusic Review by Alex Henderson

Faces is the tenth studio album, a double-LP by R&B artists Earth, Wind & Fire, released in 1980 on ARC/Columbia Records. The album reached number 2 and number 10 on the Billboard Black and Pop albums charts.

It has been certified gold in the US by the RIAA. In a 2007 interview when asked which EWF album is his favorite Earth, Wind & Fire leader Maurice White replied “Probably Faces because we were really in tune, playing together and it gave us the opportunity to explore new areas”.
The lead-off single was “Let Me Talk”. The songs “You”, and “Sparkle” followed as single releases. Unlike previous Earth, Wind and Fire albums, there was no U.S. tour in support of the album. This was also the last Earth Wind and Fire recording with guitarist Al McKay, who left the group the next year. This album is noted for featuring Steve Lukather, guitarist for EWF’s label mate Toto, on the songs “Back on the Road” and “You Went Away”.

Although they were catching more flak from critics for an alleged obsession with sociopolitical commentary and quasi-mystical references, R&B audiences hadn’t yet tired of Earth, Wind & Fire. While this album admittedly had less memorable material and was more dependent on what had become standard production and stock devices, it still landed plenty of hits on the charts. –AllMusic Review by Ron Wynn

Raise! is the eleventh studio album by Earth, Wind & Fire, produced by the band’s leader Maurice White for Kalimba Productions, and released in 1981 on CBS Records. Raise! has been certified platinum in the US by the RIAA for sales of over a million copies and gold in the UK and Canada by the British Phonographic Industry and Music Canada respectively.
Raise! was the bestselling R&B album of 1982. The album featured the #1 R&B and # 3 Pop hit “Let’s Groove”. The single “Wanna Be With You” won EWF a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By A Duo Or Group. Raise also marked the return to the band of rhythm guitarist Roland Bautista, last heard from on 1972’s Last Days and Time.
Raise! would be the final EWF album to be released on ARC. The label would be discontinued by Columbia Records the following year.

The end was near for Earth, Wind & Fire. Raise! wasn’t quite the disaster it was made out to be at the time, but it was their least distinguished overall album since the early days on Warner Bros., with the exception of their participation in the awful Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band film soundtrack in 1978. “Let’s Groove” was just a recycled mid-tempo tune from the mid-’70s, and everything else sounded desultory and uninspired. It was no surprise that after two more albums Maurice White and Company decided to take some time away from the scene. –AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

Abel Tesfaye, known by his stage name The Weeknd, is a Canadian Indie R&B singer, songwriter and record producer. His second studio album features guest appearances and production from Labrinth, Ed Sheeran, Kanye West and Lana Del Rey. Beauty Behind the Madness received generally positive reviews from music critics.

The Weeknd is a slightly nicer, and much more firmly structured, songwriter on “Beauty Behind the Madness,” his bid for pop outreach. He has expanded his longtime group of collaborators to include Top 10 hitmakers, among them Stephan Moccio, who helped write Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball,” and the ubiquitous Max Martin and his associates.

On this album, clear-cut intros, verses, choruses and bridges have replaced bleary incantations, and the music has moved from the shadowy haze of trip-hop to an emphatic, monumental clarity — high-end pop craftsmanship. The production still conjures huge spaces, but now they are brightly illuminated, with each sound in crisp focus. There are echoes of Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode and above all Michael Jackson, both in the production and in the way the Weeknd makes his voice tense, plaintive and percussive. The makeover has already paid off in two hit songs: “Earned It,” from the “Fifty Shades of Grey” soundtrack, with Mr. Moccio among the songwriters, and “Can’t Feel My Face,” with Mr. Martin and others.

The Weeknd has found new ways to mix darkness and light. Over its danceable backbeat, “Can’t Feel My Face” equates cocaine addiction with a love affair. “In the Night,” an even more upbeat Max Martin collaboration (with a triplet undercurrent like Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel”) sketches the story of a girl damaged by child sexual abuse.

But the emerging, pop-friendly Weeknd knows he has to offer something else: affection and empathy, or at least a semblance of them. “Earned It” is a relatively un-hedged love song, and so is “As You Are,” a full-fledged vow of devotion: “Show me your broken heart and all your scars/Baby I’ll take, I’ll take, I’ll take, I’ll take you as you are.” But at the end, it slows down and fades to an uncertain plea: “Baby, won’t you take me as I am?” The show of vulnerability is pop strategy that works.
